The Star Citizen game controversy is going into the next round with a new delay. This time, it’s about the ambitious game’s single-player portion Squadron 42. Check out the the new Briefin Room video series where you can learn more about it here!
Cloud Imperium Games is celebrating the 8th Anniversary of Star Citizen. But what would be a post-launch celebration in most other games, is wildly different here. The game is still deep in development with only an Alpha build of the online portion available.
Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen are roughly the same age but former is out for over six years. This puts Star Citizen’s long development inot perspective.
Truth be told, plenty of folks see Star Citizen in development hell. Arguably, no part other than Squadron 42 hurts under this. The single-player campaign portion of Star Citizen is for many the prime reason for excitement.
Backers hoped to get the beta for it this year, but it’s not going to happen. Chris Roberts, Head of CIG, explained the decision in an AMA as following:
[…] Squadron 42 will be done when it is done, and will not be released just to make a date but instead once all the tech and content is finished, polished and it plays great. I am not willing to compromise making a game I believe in with all my heart and soul, and even though everyone (including me) wants Squadron 42 sooner than later, it would be doing a huge disservice to everyone working really hard on the project and all of you that are looking forward to it to deliver something that isn’t great.
Not everyone is happy that there is no clear window for Squadron 42. While the scope of Star Citizen is unlike anything, after eight years of wait fans are starting to run thin on patience.
There is some good news though. CGI will release The Briefing Room updates on Squadron 42. You can watch the first one here where you can see loads of behind-the-scenes footage and information.
